Tata Motors Readying To Initiate  Hydrogen Truck Pilot Project

The home-grown carmaker Tata Motor will soon initiate a pilot project to equip trucks with hydrogen internal combustion engines. This is in line with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The project will be partnered with the Indian Oil Corporation and will begin in March this year. An announcement regarding this was made during the ongoing Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.

As a part of this project, the company will conduct test drives of hydrogen-powered trucks on Mumbai-Pune, Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad highways. According to Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, the trial is expected to run for 18 months, during which critical operational data will be collected. This data will inform both the refinement of the trucks and the development of hydrogen fuel infrastructure in India.

“This initiative underscores Tata Motors' dual focus on hydrogen internal combustion and fuel cell electric technologies,” said Wagh during the event in New Delhi. He also added that the company has already successfully deployed the hydrogen fuel cell technology in 15 electric fuel cell buses in collaboration with IOCL, which have been in operation for over ten months.

It is reported that the domestic car maker is also working on the launch of commercial vehicles empowered with hydrogen-fuel engines within the next 12 to 24 months. Wagh expressed optimism about the government’s continued support through initiatives such as FAME incentives and Production Linked Incentives (PLIs), which he described as pivotal for scaling up these green technologies.

The proposed pilot project is part of Tata Motors’ strategy to re-establish itself in the commercial vehicle market focussing on sustainability, safety, and advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and digital integration. With challenges faced by the automotive industry during the current financial year, Wagh is optimistic about improvements in the fourth quarter.  In his words, the hydrogen truck project not only aims to push innovation but also to align with India’s ambitious sustainability goals. As the pilot gets underway, Tata Motors continues its dominance in providing green mobility solutions, setting a precedent for the future of sustainable transportation in India.
