Mahindra Boosts Thar SUV Production to Meet Surging Demand
Mahindra Thar, renowned as one of India's most beloved SUVs, continues to ride the wave of popularity, especially because of its boxy and robust off-roaders. Responding to the increasing demand, Mahindra has ramped up production, to minimize the average waiting period to 52 weeks. This news is no less than welcome news for enthusiasts eagerly awaiting their turn to own the iconic three-door off-roader. With the increased production capacity, customers booking the Mahindra Thar in February this year can anticipate delivery as early as early 2025.

Despite facing stiff competition in the market, Mahindra Thar has managed to maintain its stronghold, retaining popularity even three years after its initial launch in India. The recent surge in demand saw Mahindra selling an impressive 6,059 units of the three-door SUV across the nation in the first month of 2024, surpassing its closest competitor, Maruti Suzuki Jimny, by a significant margin. According to reports, the buyers are mainly interested in buying the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant of the Thar, which continues to attract enthusiasts with its rugged appeal and off-road capabilities. Currently, Mahindra has a backlog of approximately 71,000 pending bookings for the SUV, with around 7,000 new bookings pouring in every month.
The Mahindra Thar lineup, available at a starting price of ₹11.25 lakh (ex-showroom), offers customers a choice between soft top and hard top variants. Additionally, buyers can select from four distinct exterior colours and opt for either petrol or diesel engine options, with transmission choices including manual and automatic units. Looking ahead, Mahindra is gearing up to expand the Thar family with the introduction of a five-door variant, presently in the testing phase. Anticipated to hit the market later this year, the five-door Thar is poised to further elevate demand and intensify competition, posing a formidable challenge to rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
As Mahindra continues to innovate and cater to evolving consumer preferences, the Thar SUV remains a frontrunner in India's competitive automotive landscape, promising enthusiasts an unparalleled blend of performance, ruggedness, and adventure.
