Made-in-India Hyundai Grand i10 Scores Zero Stars in Global NCAP Test

The made-in-India Hyundai Grand i10 scored a zero-star rating in the Global NCAP test conducted for its variant sold in the South African car market. The test was conducted for the South African market, under the #SaferCarsForAfrica campaign. According to reports, the hatchback has received a zero-star rating for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection, raising serious questions about its safety performance. The organisation flagged “serious shortcomings” in adult safety, highlighting a “high risk of life-threatening injuries”.

The model used during the test was equipped with driver and passenger airbags, seatbelt reminders, seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, and Isofix child seat mounts. Global NCAP clarified that these results apply only to the South African-spec Grand i10.

Adult Occupant Protection Results: The Hyundai Grand i10 scored 0 out of 34 points. In the frontal offset test, the hatchback offered ‘Good’ head and neck protection for both front occupants. However, the driver’s chest protection was rated ‘Poor’, while the passenger’s was ‘Adequate’. Under the side impact test, the model failed to perform according to the determined standards and exceeded the highest allowed safety threshold. The driver’s knee protection was rated ‘Marginal’. Global NCAP rated the body shell and footwell area as unstable and unable to withstand further load.

Child Occupant Protection Results: In child safety, the Grand i10 performed comparatively better, scoring 28.57 out of 49 points. Isofix-mounted, rearward-facing child seats for 3-year-old and 18-month-old occupants prevented head exposure and offered full protection in frontal impact. The hatchback achieved a full dynamic score of 24/24, while CRS installation scored 4.57/12 and vehicle assessment 0/13 in child protection testing.
