Kamrej Toll Plaza to Become India’s First Barrier-Free Plaza

For those who travel frequently on highways across the country, this news will bring a big smile to their face. According to recent reports, to facilitate highway commuters enjoy seamless highway travel, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is going initiate the trial of a barrier-free toll plaza at the Choryasi toll plaza in Kamrej, Gujarat, from February 2, 2026.

Once fully implemented, the system will allow vehicles to pass through the toll stretch without stopping, significantly reducing congestion and waiting times for motorists. The Kamrej toll plaza has been selected as the pilot site for the Central Government’s ambitious plan to introduce multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) digital toll plazas across national highways. Under this new system, traditional toll booths and manual toll collection will be completely eliminated.

Toll charges will be automatically deducted through an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. High-resolution cameras are installed at the toll plaza to scan the number plate of a vehicle crossing the toll, after which the applicable toll amount will be debited directly from the FASTag-linked account. This will make the entire tolling process fully digital, contactless, and free from human management.

It is believed that the implementation of the new system will improve traffic flow, enhance travel efficiency, and reduce fuel wastage caused by long queues at toll plazas. It will also help in managing toll operations and minimising disputes related to toll payments.

Reports further indicate that a team of more than 25 technical experts from Taiwan’s FETC agency has been working to implement this technology since September. With final preparations underway, the authorities aim to make the system fully operational within the next two weeks.
