Hyundai Trials EV Battery Subscription in South Korea

Hyundai Motor Group is conducting a short-term trial program to check the feasibility of launching a battery subscription option for EVs. This is a first-of-its-kind project initiated by any automaker in South Korea. The main objective of this initiative is to minimize the ownership cost of EV and provide a robust solution to issues like battery lifespan and replacement. As a part of this project, the carmaker is conducting this testing on five Hyundai Ioniq 5 taxis in the Seoul metropolitan area. Under this project, the participating operators will pay a monthly subscription fee to Hyundai Capital for battery usage rather than buying a battery.

The owners of Hyundai EVs will be given the facility to exchange their depleted batteries for fully functional replacements owned and managed by Hyundai Capital. The successful completion of this trial will eliminate the need for costly battery replacements and ensure continuous vehicle operation without major financial burdens. The initiative has been made possible through a regulatory sandbox approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which permits the separation of battery ownership from the vehicle. This was earlier restricted under existing laws.

According to the sources of the company, it selected fleet taxis for the pilot due to their high mileage, which accelerates battery wear and creates frequent replacement needs. The company plans to use this real-world testing to assess whether the subscription model can effectively lower operational costs, extend vehicle lifespan, and improve overall EV adoption. Industry experts believe that the cost of the battery directly affects the total cost of the electric vehicle. By separating the battery from the purchase, Hyundai aims to reduce the financial barrier for consumers and create a more flexible ownership model.

After the successful completion of this program, the automaker intends to expand the program to individual consumers later in 2026, potentially reshaping how electric vehicles are bought and maintained in the future.
