FasTag Toll Rules To Change From November 15, 2025
Aiming to strengthen the FASTag system and encourage digital payments, the government of India is going to implement new toll payment rules across the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has revised the toll structure to encourage vehicle owners to shift away from cash transactions and reduce the crowd at toll plazas.

Major Changes Under the New Rule
As per the new guidelines, vehicles passing through toll plazas without an active FASTag will have to pay the revised charges:
• Cash payments: A Double toll will be charged if the vehicle owner pays the toll in cash, if the FasTag of his vehicle is inactive.
.• UPI or digital payments: 1.25 times the toll rate will be charged.• Active FASTag users: No change in existing rates.
According to MoRTH officials, this step is introduced to reward digital users and discourage cash payments that often cause traffic delays at toll booths.
How to Avoid Paying Double Toll
The car owners are advised to check their FASTag balance and activity status before travelling. In case of an inactive tag or technical issue, drivers can take the following steps:
• Opt for UPI payment instead of cash to reduce extra charges.
• Recharge the FASTag wallet instantly using the mobile app if the balance is low.
• If the tag is inactive or blacklisted, pay for that trip through UPI and then reactivate or replace the tag.
• Ensure the RFID tag is correctly placed and the windshield is clean for smooth scanning.
Common Issues and How to Fix Them
• Mismatched or incorrect vehicle registration details may result in toll rejection.
• If the tag is lost or damaged, pay using UPI and order a replacement immediately through the issuing bank or provider.
FASTag Annual Pass for Regular Commuters
Earlier this year, to simplify toll payments for frequent travellers, the government introduced an Annual FASTag Pass priced at Rs 3,000. The pass covers tolls for one year or up to 200 crossings, whichever occurs first.
• A route-specific annual pass is also available for Rs 2,999.
• The pass can be purchased and activated via the Highway Yatra app or the NHAI website.
• This scheme is currently available for private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans.
Example of the New Toll Rates
If the base toll is Rs 100:
• FASTag payment: Rs 100
• UPI payment: Rs 125
• Cash payment: Rs 200
This example shows that the digital payment will be faster and more economical for all drivers.
Travel Tips for Motorists
• Maintain a minimum balance in your FASTag wallet.
• Check tag validity and vehicle category before long trips.
• Activate the auto-recharge feature and save the customer care number for emergencies.
The new rules aim to streamline toll collection, reduce delays, and promote a cashless, efficient travel experience across the country’s highways.
