Book ‘May a Million Buds Bloom’ Unveiled by Anand Mahindra

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, has unveiled a coffee table book titled “May a Million Buds Bloom”. The book discusses the impact of Project Nanhi Kali on the overall well-being of girls. The project was initiated in 1996 by the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation to empower underprivileged girls by educating them.

The girls included in the project are provided with academic support, sports training, access to technology, and skill development to help girls break socio-economic barriers. Addressing the book launch event, Anand Mahindra said, “Our endeavour to empower underprivileged girls through academic support, sports, technology and now skill training is a testament of how Project Nanhi Kali has evolved with changing times,”. Moving ahead, Mahindra said that the book combines visual art and storytelling to highlight the impact of the project beyond statistics.

The book has been authored by Nitya Manoj Kumar, who spent three summers documenting the lives of Nanhi Kali girls across the country. Her work captures experiences from rural Maharashtra, tribal settlements in Andhra Pradesh’s Araku hills, border districts such as Darjeeling and Shravasti, and the dense bylanes of Varanasi.
During its three-decade journey, Project Nanhi Kali has expanded from after-school academic support to comprehensive learning and skill-building. The initiative introduced a structured sports curriculum, culminating in the annual Toofaan Games and Toofaan Cup, which now count more than 150,000 participants in athletics and over 1,000 football teams, making it one of the largest active girls’ clubs in India.

Adapting to the National Education Policy 2020, the programme recently launched Nanhi Kali 3.0 for the academic year 2024–25. The updated curriculum equips girls in government secondary schools with 21st-century skills, including financial and digital literacy, as well as essential life skills to support their transition from classrooms to workplaces.
