Tata Nano Engine, Power and Performance
The smartly designed people’s car Tata Nano, which carries an overall length of 3099 mm, is powered by an all-aluminum engine with displacement of 624 cc that is very well supported by its twin cylinders. The mini power-train is uniquely positioned at the rear of the car, beneath the boot, which makes it a back wheel drive vehicle. The rear mounted engine not only adds to the efficiency of the small car but also dramatically improves the safety aspect.
To start the ignition of the engine the small car Tata Nano now features a new advanced starter-motor that assists in hassle-free start of the vehicle, unlike the earlier version that had some issues with the motor, although the issue was fixed when Tata Motors replaced the same with a brand new one.
The engine that is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission and multi-point injection system is also well supported by an exclusive engine control management unit that supervises the activities of the engine and boosts its performance. The electronic system incorporated in the small car Tata Nano is the Bosch's New Value Motronic system that is basically developed to provide maximum functionality at minimal cost. The 4-speed manual gearbox has synchromesh on all forward gears, while a sliding mesh is given on the reverse gear along with overdrive on the 4th gear.
To carry the load smoothly and perform suitably on the uneven surfaces the Tata Nano in the front comes equipped with independent and lower wish-bone that does its duty with McPherson Strut suspension, which comes with gas-filled dampers and anti-roll bar, whereas the rear piece of mini-car has semi trailing arm feature with coil spring outfitted with gas-filled shock absorbers to provide comfortable ride to the rear occupants.
And the very big surprise from the home grown car maker is Tata Nano diesel! Yes, the company is mulling to bring the second wonder through Tata Nano in the form of smallest diesel engine that might read 700cc. Reports claim the mileage of the upcoming diesel engine will be more than 40 kmpl, WoW!

The small car Tata Nano endows its consumers with satisfactory acceleration numbers with its specially ordered 2-cylinder petrol engine, which is based on Bosch’s Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) technology. This mini wonder motor outpours a maximum power of 38 PS at 5500 rpm that helps it to achieve the sparkling mark of 100 kph from standstill in 30 seconds, this number might sound small but it is the best possible extraction from Tata Nano’s tiny petrol mill. The peak torque of about 51 Nm at 4000 rpm plays a vital in pulling off a top speed of 105 kmph at an effortless ease. In general the Tata Nano pick and acceleration reports are quite solid considering the 624cc displacement of the small car.
Tata Nano Interiors and Features
By merely looking at Tata Nano’s compact exteriors, you cannot imagine the ‘huge’ space inside the cabin waiting for you. Be it front seats or rear ones, the mini car provides you abundant headroom, leg room and knee room; irrespective of your height. Moreover, at times you feel what to do with such ample room apart from sitting comfortably. The interiors of Tata Nano resemble not only a proper hatchback, but much more than that with its wholesome room. The word ‘small car’ at times seems to get subdued especially when it comes to interiors. No doubt the interiors lack that charming appeal, but again, looking at the low price-point, it’s on the higher side. Subsequently, it can be said that Tata Nano is more spacious in comparison to Maruti 800 and Maruti Alto, the company claims 21% more space than these famous small cars.
The front row of Tata Nano has 3-spoke steering wheel, while the base and mid variants of Tata Nano features a simple two spoke one, but it continues to reflect the cleanness it carries. This is something very obvious that the company has done in order to stretch across the features and lower the cost in manufacturing the vehicle. There are many other cost reduction aspects like the lack of a trip meter in the base and CX models, lack of co driver door lock in the base and CX models and even the rubber insulation in the doors and the roof linings. The front power window switches in Tata Nano have been very cleverly placed on the centre console in order to reduce the manufacturing cost in the vehicle. To provide each variant a unique identity the dashboard of Tata Nano comes in different shades of Medium Graphite, Ebony Black and Barley Beige. The element of premium seats with option of rear parcel tray comes as regular in Nano CX and Nano LX trims. The air conditioner and heater function is kept standard in LX version, but the presence is felt in the Base version as well and it should have been available as optional feature. The steering is well in place and driving is comfortable.
Tata Nano Exteriors and Features
The small car, Tata Nano is styled aerodynamically with cost-effective yet amazing exteriors. The excitement gets doubled when one has a choice of six dazzling colors in the top-end and mid variant to choose from along with three impressive shades available with the standard variant.
Keeping in mind the safety aspect, the Tata Nano has now got driver side ORVM (Outside Rear View Mirror) staring right from the base variant, while the mid variant CX and LX features both the driver side as well as passenger side ORVMs. The feature of roof beading and roof spoiler that goes missing in both the initial variants of Nano sees light in the top-end variant of LX.
Safety Features in Tata Nano
Driving and Handling of Tata Nano
On the road, when Tata Nano appears it looks like a small cub sprinting with a mighty heart. The little car has got small 12-inch tubeless wheels that offer a fairly strong grip on the roads, but at times they appear a bit shaky when driven at top speed especially on the speed breakers and potholes in the city conditions, which is due to lack of pillars. Whereas, the drive is surprisingly smooth when it comes to clean and plain roads along with superbly firm and much more on the highways even at the top speed. The steering is light and responsive, much better than in the earlier version, which looked congested sometimes. While driving one of the most notable features inside the cabin is the reduction of noise-vibration-harshness (NVH). Compared to the older Tata Nano it has been lessened by two to three decibels.

Tata Nano: Road Test Report
On papers Tata Nano is good, and it was prove to be even better when New Tata Nano 2012 arrived with more features. Now let’s get it on the road for an actual acid test.
The new mini car has got 3PS of additional power output that calculates a total of 38PS (earlier 35PS), which makes it stand next to Maruti 800. Now the 624cc MPFI engine will be seen yielding the power of 800cc, the real exciting stuff. No doubt, feature list has increased but not quality as many niggles inside-out still prevail. The city commuting is not all an issue with Tata Nano as it goes very well under 80kph mark, which is an absolute achievement for an engine that has such small cubic centimeter numbers. One reason for this liveliness is the feather light kerb weight and excellent retuning of petrol power train by Tata Motors. But when it comes to slow speeds of 0-10kph, while in city or at parking space, it really haunts as the absence of power steering is felt, which not a part of Nano even in the top model. The steering that was expected to be light in 2012 model has not changed much, you need some good power drive at low speeds in traffic and parking, while once it catches the rhythm (takes speed) it turns lighter and lighter with every gear shift. Nano had no complaints in climbing the ghats 2 mature people with luggage sitting inside. The gear shifts are quite smooth compared harder of Maruti 800 and Maruti Alto.
In 2012 Tata Nano one sees two images of vibration levels, first when doors are open at standstill state they do vibrate and when closed there is no harshness or vibration heard/felt neither in the cabin nor alongside door. Overall NVH levels as promised by the company are less in New Nano. Usually Tata cars can take on anything without breaking into panic situation and Nano is no distinct as it a very god off roading at 40kph on kuccha roads. The assisted brakes are simply at their level best, against predecessor, just a deliberate stamp on it and it slows down with pace. In general, the ride quality has improved with comfortable suspension system. The small car performs very well in city conditions especially in the narrow lanes where small turning radius is put to better use. There was obvious gearbox complain while decelerating in gear. On the longer rides, it does well fighting its way out in the hot winds. The AC inside, is a real chiller and on top of that Tata Nano drops in delivering some excellent fuel efficiency numbers. The innovatively packaged car can get 4 adults seated with comfort and loads of leg room and headroom inside.
