Nissan Evalia Review by Expert

Nissan Evalia PicturesThe Urban Utility Vehicle (UUV), as dubbed by company, is here in the form of Nissan Evalia. The current available options of Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) in India do possess space, but not up to the mark. Hence to provide you with a ‘true meaning’ of versatility and spaciousness here is Nissan Evalia. There are few popular names in this segment viz. Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo and Maruti Ertiga alongside a handful of others. The relatively unexplored MUV market welcomes this new offering well and the 7-seater Evalia is here to recreate history as it did earlier with the launch of Nissan Micra and the Nissan Sunny sedan.

The Nissan Evalia known as the ‘Nissan NV200’ in the international market, where NV stands for New-generation Vehicle, and after almost four years of global launch this is latest generation. Launched in 2009 in Japan, later migrated to Europe the same year and bagged awards like ‘Van of the year’ in Europe. Since its formal showcasing at the Auto Expo’2012 held in New Delhi this year it’s been the most awaited MPV. With an appearance exactly like a van with rear sliding doors, tall-boy image, classy Japanese designing, higher ground clearance it looks confident to face any challenge thrown by competitors. The front fog lamps, bigger alloy wheels and body colored bumpers along with large van-like Nissan Evalia Picturestail gate at rear bestow it an ideally spaced vehicle.

Evalia with a 1.5L dCi diesel engine and stunningly new features such as dash mounted gear lever, rear monitor camera and tilt adjust power steering it’s a big plus for the new Nissan car in India. Furthermore, with 2900L of huge boot that is extracted by folding of 2nd and 3rd row screams space, besides loads of storage bins and handy aspects. The safety has always been a crucial element of focus for Japan-based auto giant and hence adequate passive and active safety features in Nissan Evalia are incorporated. With maximum power of 85 PS at 3750 rpm and 200 Nm of top toque at 1900 rpm it easily challenges its opponents.  In India, the Nissan Evalia is a one of a kind resourceful vehicle that merges as a family car and it will also be in the hit list of people movers.

Nissan Evalia Rivals

Nissan Evalia MPV provides its rivals a run for their money in most of the aspects. Here the closest challenger between Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova. And between the two, it’s Xylo that presents ‘more’ decent threat to Evalia; as it starts with just above Rs 7 Lakh whereas Nissan MPV is out with a price label of Rs 8.49  The exteriors of Nissan Evalia look large than Xylo although when measured it falls lesser comparatively. The frontage carries proper Japanese appearance, while Mahindra MPV is slanted towards bold posture. The interiors of Xylo has many modern and unique features, while most remarkable is ‘flatbed seats’ and voice command control, but here Evalia acts rather professionally to its segment; offering space, space and space alongside little significance to features. All seats, sparing the front row can be folded, acres of room is at hand. Besides this with all three rows in use, there is still large space for proper luggage; which a concern with Mahindra Xylo. On the driving and handling part it works wonders however, as per road test reviews available they are bad not too bad but are pretty satisfactory. Of course, it can’t match up to the capabilities of 2.5L or the 2.2L Mhawk diesel engine with its mini 1.5L diesel mill, although it results in an interesting competition to watch-out for.

Nissan Evalia Mileage and Fuel Efficiency

The Japanese carmaker, Nissan is pretty well aware about the enticement of Indian car buyers; as a result, it has introduced its inaugural MPV with a class leading mileage. Available with a tested 1.5L dCi diesel motor under hood that smokes out maximum power of 85 PS at 3750 rpm, moreover the peak torque measures 200 Nm at 1900 rpm. With this lower displacement engine, Nissan Evalia mileage creates newer heights in the MPV segment. The city drives in a Nissan Evalia are capable of provide you with a fuel economy of nearby 14 kmpl. Furthermore the longer route drives outside city limits i.e. highways will deliver you an ARAI certified mileage of 19.3 kmpl. On the whole, the segment has never witnessed such huge mileage coming out of a large-size MPV like Nissan Evalia, hence it will work wonders for the Japan based firm.

Nissan Evalia Engine, Power and Performance

The Nissan Evalia swanks modern styling cues and capacious space inside, besides a proper powertrain that takes the MPV to next levels of refinement and fuel economy. Nissan Evalia engine is none other than tested K9K 1.5L dCi 4-cylinder, common rail direct injection (CRDi) that currently performs its duties dedicatedly under hood of Nissan Sunny diesel sedan. This reliable motor is now tweaked to get more power output and greater drag capabilities in order to perform better with all seven occupants in with their luggage. The Nissan Evalia Diesel 1.5L gives out nearly 85 PS of maximum power at 3750 rpm, while a respectable torque of 200 Nm at 1900 rpm is smoked out of this trustworthy motor. The engine of Nissan Evalia is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission; moreover an automatic transmission version is expected to follow by early next year.

Nissan Evalia Pick Up and Acceleration

As said, the engine acts pretty resourcefully as far as Nissan Evalia MPV is concerned. The vehicle comes good when its pick up and acceleration is put to test. Although the Nissan Evalia will not match up with the mammoth diesel engines of nearly 2.2L and 2.5L for Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova respectively, but it provides best in class acceleration with its 1.5L K9K diesel engine. Here the Nissan Evalia top speed is near about 120-140 kmph, which is quite appropriate for a vehicle that falls under the multi-purpose vehicle category. On the other hand, it will be able to reach the 100 kph mark from naught in 16-18 seconds. These numbers might seem a bit boring to someone, however you need to keep in mind the fact that Nissan Evalia won’t be participating in a Formula-One racing competition, but will be a safe urban people mover. As result, these Nissan Evalia pick up figures are truly acceptable and welcoming.

Nissan Evalia Interiors and Features

Nissan Evalia Stereo Picture

The interiors of Nissan Evalia are totally different from the conventional MPVs currently plying on Indian roads. Said to be an MPV it’s more inclined towards van-like structure from inside. Moreover, you can get a sense of van by going through exteriors too, especially the sliding doors and huge tail opening. To start with, there is stadium like room in the cabin and at one point word ‘space’ feels subdued. When all seats folded excluding first row, it looks like a flat cricket pitch, yes… flat, thanks to the front wheel drive mechanism due to which there is no transmission tunnel and you get more convenient space to park your luggage. The Nissan Evalia has a seating layout of 2+3+2, however you might think, what’s distinct, even Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo has same. But do they offer enough space after all seats are up, the answer is bound to be in refutation, here comes uniqueness of Nissan Evalia as you get huge room to keep at least two large-size suitcases along with some soft stuff. A width of 1.6 m is decent enough to have ample shoulder and elbow room on all three rows. With sliding door entry to the second row is quite easier. Also, with low floor, enter and exit aspects in the Nissan Evalia are at ease, particularly for aged family members and kids.

The front dash of the Nissan Evalia is prominently occupied by the gear lever which is first of its kind in segment; positioned very close to dashboard that gives out ample space between the front seats of Nissan Evalia. The power steering comes with tilt adjustable function along with driver’s seat with height adjustable choice. The modern instrument cluster comprise of cruising range, tachometer, digital clock, multi-information screen with trip computer, real time fuel mileage and many more. Some of rare convenient features that make way are pop-out windows, second row with space saving foldable snack-trays with cup holders as seen in aircrafts, dedicated third-row air vent that takes care of middle-row as well.  Moreover, 2-DIN audio system that plays CD/MP3/Radio along with 4 speakers for surround entertainment purpose and to charge your laptops, smart phones there is 12V power outlets.

Nissan Evalia Exterior and Features

Nissan Evalia Headlight PictureNissan Evalia is designed and developed keeping in mind the needs of the passenger car buyers along with private consumers with large families and thus it exemplifies higher levels of build quality and robustness. With a 524 mm cargo height which is class leading helps use of Evalia as a cargo van too. Look wise, the Nissan Evalia exteriors reflect the Japanese style quotient at front fascia, the wide spread windscreen makes the vehicle car appears bigger when motionless, whilst compact bonnet line displays its compactness when moving. However, what pleases most about the exteriors is its close resemblance to a big sized MUV. The Nissan Evalia frontage with the swept-back type headlamps carries a distinctive emergence together with imbibed muscle cues flowing. Together with chrome finished ‘smiling’ radiator grille gets the company emblem sitting proudly. The front bumper is largely occupied with the air intake portion and there are round shaped fog lamps taking care of the front body styling.

Nissan Evalia PicturesThe side look of Nissan Evalia is more like a rectangular shaped big van with a flat rear. There are sliding doors on the sides contrary to ordinary hinged doors in cars that prove very easy for entry and exit of the passengers. The outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) are body colored, which are electrically adjustable but there are no side indicator integration. The large top hinged tail gate that opens upwards facilitates loading and unloading things quite easily in the 7 seater Nissan Evalia. The rear has high mounted warning lamp along with tail lamps just above the rear body colored bumper. Compared to other vans, the Evalia is taller and bigger and thus more things can be fitted inside it. Additionally this large fortress stands confidently on stylish and broad looking alloy wheels. The Japanese MPV that scales 4400 mm in length, 1690 mm width and a height close to 1880 mm comes all the way near to the segment leaders and will surely distract the sales.

Nissan Evalia Driving and Handling

Nissan Evalia Steering Wheel PictureThe award winning 1.5L dCi K9K common rail engine with a 5 speed gearbox all placed at the front keeps the Nissan Evalia agile as any medium sized car. The long body though increases its turning radius a bit but not that bothering.  The high torque at low rpm producing dCi engine promises that the MPV suits well to the city conditions and it will not be cumbersome to take the car inside even the cramped of the spaces in India. The power assisted light steering wheel ensures that turning Nissan Evalia in city conditions is quite easier.  The suspension positioning at front and rear is pretty okay and absorbs bumps well without forwarding it to the occupants inside. The capable front disc and rear drum brakes make braking at effortless at higher speed on the highways. On the whole the handling of Nissan Evalia pretty convivial be it city or longer routes.

Safety Features in Nissan Evalia

Nissan Evalia Courtsey Lamps PictureIf it is to seat seven people and is intended to be a passenger car, Nissan Evalia has commensurate safety features as well. With Japan-based auto giant protection of the occupants can never go for a toss, Sunny and Micra are best examples and now Nissan Evalia has also bestowed with class leading safety features. At the front there are twin air bags for driver and co passenger coupled with anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Besides there are seatbelts for all occupants, central locking and speed sensing door locks along with door open warning indicator. Other important security functions include advanced engine immobilizer and high mounted stop lamp. Furthermore safety features in Nissan Evalia has the backing of solid built quality in the form of monocoque construction.

Nissan Evalia Accessories

The new Nissan car in India is expected to have radio/ CD and mp3 player as standard on all models with 2 speakers. There will be Cloth upholstery as standard and leather upholstery will be optional. Besides this the stereo system will have USB and Bluetooth connectivity. A navigation system designed and developed by Nissan will be there inside the new seven seater car coming to India. A parking camera and intelligent key is what one should look for in the Evalia MUV in India.

Nissan Evalia Conclusion

Nissan Evalia is truly a multi talented vehicle that has competence to carry 7-8 occupants along with their decent amount of luggage, which is the shortcoming of ongoing MPVs available in the country. The utility vehicle has got convenient sliding doors with low floor that ensures uncomplicated enter and exit of passengers. Moreover, acres of space come out for extra cargo when two rows get folded together with numerous storage spaces and worth mentioning ‘folding snack tray’ behind seat as seen in aircrafts. Despite all these big aspects it can be said ‘compact’ in dimensions, as it measures less in length against Toyota Innova. This means that Nissan Evalia is a smart vehicle which sits happily amid Innova and Maruti Ertiga. Now, as we said earlier that there is only one thing that decides the fate of this car and it is price. Hence the price has also not let us down that starts with around Rs 8.50 Lakh (ex Delhi), it is bound to be a super hit not only among large families but also fleet operators in India. Nissan projects this car on two fronts – space inside and low cost of ownership. With excellent Nissan Evalia mileage and front looks similar to a big SUV and easy maneuvering in city drives is what the Evalia offer to its buyers. Overall, a greatly-priced package.
