Understanding the Mechanism Behind Turbocharged Engines
As a car aspirant, you would have noticed that the cars launched today are offered with three engine options: petrol engine, turbocharged petrol engine, and diesel engine. As manufacturers focus on delivering higher performance, better fuel efficiency, and lower emissions, turbocharged engines have emerged as a key solution. In today’s scenario, manufacturers are developing cars in bigger sizes and are enriched with an array of contemporary features. On the contrary, the size of the engine is getting smaller. To manage the proper balance between performance, economy, and affordability, car manufacturers are increasingly relying on turbocharging technology.

What Is Turbocharging?
Turbocharging is a method of increasing the power and efficiency of an internal combustion engine by forcing compressed air into the engine. A turbocharged engine uses a turbocharger, which is a turbine-driven forced induction device powered by the engine’s exhaust gases.
The turbocharger consists of three critical components: a turbine, a compressor, and a shaft connecting both turbine and compressor. The gases generated by the engine are directed toward the turbine, instead of moving out from the exhaust pipe. The pressure of these gases makes the turbine spin. This rotation drives the compressor, which draws in fresh air, compresses it, and forces it into the engine’s cylinders. The additional air allows more fuel to be burned per cycle, resulting in increased power output and improved efficiency.
Turbocharger vs Supercharger
While both turbochargers and superchargers use forced induction, the major difference lies in how they are powered. A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gases, whereas a supercharger is mechanically connected to the engine’s crankshaft using belts. Turbochargers are sometimes referred to as turbo superchargers, as both systems aim to boost engine performance by increasing air intake.
Types of Turbochargers
Depending on engine requirements and performance goals, manufacturers use different types of turbochargers, including single-scroll, twin-scroll, and variable geometry turbochargers (VGT). Each type uses a different approach to manage exhaust flow and boost delivery.
High-pressure turbocharged systems also include components such as wastegates and blow-off valves. These safety mechanisms regulate pressure levels and prevent damage by diverting excess exhaust gases or compressed air when limits are exceeded.
Advantages of Turbocharging
Turbocharging offers several benefits that explain its growing popularity:

Drawbacks of Turbocharging
Despite its advantages, turbocharging also has certain drawbacks:

* Turbo lag at low speeds due to insufficient exhaust gas flow
* High operating temperatures require advanced cooling systems
As emission norms become stricter and expectations of consumers increase, turbocharging is expected to remain a cornerstone of modern engine design, helping manufacturers deliver powerful yet efficient vehicles.
