Tips for Cleaning the Engine Air Filter of Your Car

Tips for Cleaning the Engine Air Filter of Your Car

The engine air filter plays a crucial role in sending clean air to the engine for developing sufficient flow of air and improved performance. However, after driving for long kilometres the accumulation of dirt, dust, and debris restricts the airflow and affects the fuel efficiency of your car. Cleaning an engine air filter is an easy task and can be performed at home with little knowledge and the required tools. Below are some necessary tips to consider for cleaning the engine air filter of your car.

1. Know When to Clean the Filter: As a general practice, it is recommended to clean the air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 kilometers, or more frequently if you drive in areas with excessive flow of dust. Symptoms of dirty air filters include insufficient speed even after pressing the full accelerator, poor fuel economy or unusual sounds coming from the            engine.

2. Locate the Air Filter: Open the bonnet of your car and find the place where the air filter is installed. It's usually a rectangular or cylindrical plastic box connected to the air intake. Unlock the clips or screws to open the cover of the filter and remove the filter carefully.

3. Inspect the Filter Condition: Take out the filter and see across the filter. If you aren't able to see clearly across it or it is clogged with dirt and debris, then it requires cleaning or replacement. Air filters made from foam and cotton are easy to clean, but heavily soiled paper filters should be replaced.

4. Use Gentle Cleaning Methods: To clean the filters of foam or cotton, wash them under the tap with high-pressure water to remove the dirt. You can use a vacuum cleaner to remove stubborn debris. Or wash the filter with mild soap and lukewarm water. Let it dry for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.

5. Let It Dry Completely: After cleaning the filter thoroughly, keep it for drying in sunrays or for the whole night. Remember not to use an air dryer or some other tool to dry the air filter, doing this can damage the filters.

6. Apply Filter Oil (if required): There are some reusable filters, mainly installed in luxurious cars which require oiling after cleaning. To maintain the better performance of such filters, use the oil recommended by the manufacturer and apply a light, even coat to remove the dust effectively.

7. Reinstall Carefully: Once the filter is fully dry, place the filter back into the housing, cover the filter housing properly, and ensure there’s a proper seal to stop the entrance of unfiltered air to the engine.

Conclusion: Cleaning the air filter regularly of your car’s engine is a cost-effective way to maintain its performance and fuel efficiency. It’s a simple task that every car owner can do with a bit of care and attention.
