Renewing Car Registration After 15 Years In India: A Guide

Having a car in India comes with certain legal responsibilities, and one of the most important responsibilities to accomplish is having a valid Registration Certificate (RC). As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory for every vehicle running on the Indian roads to have an active registration number. But having the registration of a car or any vehicle is not a one-time process? It is necessary to renew the registration of your car after the completion of 15 years from the date it was registered for the first time. After that, it is mandatory to re-register your car every five years, as long as the vehicle is roadworthy.

In this blog, we discuss the process and documents required to renew the registration number of your car after 15 years.

Renewal of Car Registration After 15 Years
The process to renew the registration of your vehicle starts 60 days before the expiry date of the RC. You will be required to submit the necessary documents to the RTO and take your vehicle for inspection by him. The RTO will check the condition of your car to confirm it is suitable for driving on public roads. Once the inspection is completed, you will have to complete the paperwork, pay the necessary fees, and renew your RC.

Step-by-Step Process to Renew Car Registration

1. Fill Form 25 and provide the necessary details of your car.
2. Submit the form and documents to the RTO where your vehicle was registered for the first time.
3. Pay the applicable road tax, if required (normally, there is no need to pay the road tax again, as you had already paid the lifetime road tax at the time of purchasing the car).
4. Take your vehicle for inspection before the registering authority.
5. Pay the re-registration fees and collect the receipt as proof.
6. The RTO will issue the new registration certificate, which you can collect or receive by mail.

Documents Required for Renewing  the Car Registration

Before taking your car for its registration, don’t forget to carry the following documents.
Duly filled Form 25
Original RC or smart card
Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
Car insurance certificate
Fitness certificate issued by RTO
Pencil print of engine and chassis number
Copy of PAN card or Form 60/61
Owner’s signature identification
Proof of road tax payment

Note: Remember, the exact list of documents and fees may be slightly different from state to state.

When Else Is there A Need to Re-Register Your Car?
Apart from renewing the RC of your vehicle after a 15-year renewal, there is a need to re-register your car if you are shifting to another state for more than one year. In such cases, it is important to re-register your vehicle in the new state according to its RTO rules. Renewing your car registration on time ensures that your vehicle is maintained according to rules and regulations and is suitable for driving on roads. It also protects you from the penalties imposed for driving with an expired RC.
