Post-Holi Car Cleaning Tips to Remove Colour Stains

Festivals in India are not only festivals, but they are also a time of spending quality time with family and friends, with laughter and carefree fun. The festival of holi also known as the festival of colours in no longer an exception. But once the festivities are over and the gulal has settled, you might notice that the sporting colour of your car is no more attractive than it was before playing with colours. Bright powders and coloured water can stick on the paint, glass, and even the cabin, not only spoils the exterior and interior of your car, but even if not cleaned for a long time, may leave stubborn marks.

Interestingly, with timely and gentle clean-up, your car can look as good as new. Below are some ways by which you can get rid of these stubborn stains.

1. Rinse First, Always

Before you touch the paint with a cloth, give your car a thorough rinse. This step is an important step to follow.  Dry colour powder contains tiny particles that can scratch the clear coat if you start wiping straight away. Use a hose or pressure washer to remove as much loose colour and dirt as possible. Think of it as loosening the grip of the stain before a proper wash. The sooner you rinse your car after Holi, the better.

2. Don’t Use Harsh Cleaners

It may be tempting to reach for strong household detergents, but they can strip protective wax and damage your paint finish. Instead, use a proper car shampoo or a mild shampoo diluted in water. Take a clean microfiber cloth or soft sponge and wipe gently in straight strokes—avoid circular motions, which can leave swirl marks, especially on darker colours. Work panel by panel rather than trying to clean the whole car at once.

3. For Stains That Have Stuck On The Car Surface

If some colour has dried and settled into the surface, it will need a little extra care. A diluted vinegar solution can help break down stubborn stains. Apply lightly with a soft cloth and wipe gently. Avoid hard brushes or abrasive pads, which can scratch the paint. If a stain persists, it’s better to consult a professional detailer than risk causing permanent damage.

4. Check Inside the Cabin

Holi colours rarely stay outside. Start by vacuuming seats and carpets to remove dry powder. For wet stains, use a mild soap solution and blot gently with a clean cloth—never rub aggressively, as this can spread the stain further into the fabric. Wipe the dashboard and door trims with a damp microfiber cloth. If floor mats are stained, remove them and wash them separately.

5. Clean the Glass Surfaces

Coloured water can leave a hazy film on windows and mirrors, affecting visibility. Use a glass cleaner or a simple vinegar-water mix to clean the windshield, side windows, and outside mirrors. Clear visibility is essential before you head back on the road.

6. Don’t Ignore Tyres and Wheel Arches

Tyres and lower body panels often collect the most grime. Rinse them properly and scrub lightly if needed. Once dry, applying a tyre dressing can restore their dark, clean finish.

Conclusion

The key to preventing permanent Holi stains is quick attention and gentle cleaning. Avoid shortcuts, harsh chemicals, and scrubbing dry surfaces. A careful wash within a day of the celebrations is usually enough to keep your car looking as it should—vibrant, clean, and ready for your next adventure.
