Performance Review of Cars Launched in FQ1 2026
In recent years, the Indian car market has emerged as a hub of new launches. After witnessing massive growth in 2025, the year 2026 started with the launch of some highly-awaited launches by established carmakers. From SUVs and EVs to MPVs and premium flagships, the first quarter of the year saw strong activity and impressive customer response. Many of these newly launched vehicles have already started showing strong sales numbers, proving that buyer interest remains high in both conventional and electric mobility segments. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most talked-about launches and how they have performed so far.

Mahindra XUV 7XO
Launched in early January 2026, the Mahindra XUV 7XO has shown strong and consistent sales performance. Deliveries of this three-row SUV began in mid-January, and it quickly gained traction in the market. The SUV recorded sales of 10,133 units in its first month, followed by 9,112 units in February and 9,210 units in March. This means Mahindra sold nearly 30,000 units of the XUV 7XO within just three months. The XUV 7XO is essentially the facelifted version of the XUV700. It continues with the same engine lineup, including a 2.2L turbocharged diesel and a 2.0L turbo-petrol engine, both available with manual and automatic transmission options. However, the updated styling and refreshed interior packaging have made it more appealing to buyers.
Tata Sierra
Tata Motors brought back the iconic Sierra in November last year, and deliveries officially started in mid-January 2026. The SUV has generated significant market excitement and strong demand from buyers. In its first month, Tata sold 7,003 units of the Sierra. February saw 7,100 units sold, while March numbers increased to 9,003 units. This steady rise suggests that Tata Motors is gradually overcoming supplier limitations and increasing production at its Sanand manufacturing facility. The new Sierra is available with multiple powertrain options, including a 1.5L direct-injection turbo petrol, a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol, and a 1.5L diesel engine. Manual and automatic transmissions are offered on the naturally aspirated petrol and diesel versions, while the turbo-petrol comes exclusively with an automatic gearbox.
Kia Seltos
The second-generation Kia Seltos entered the mid-size SUV segment in January 2026 and has already delivered strong numbers. Kia reported sales of 10,639 units in the first month, followed by 10,308 units in February and 11,041 units in March. These figures reflect the strong demand for the redesigned SUV. The new-generation Seltos is larger than the outgoing model and features a completely fresh design inside and out. It is offered with three engine choices: a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5L turbo-diesel, and a 1.5L turbo-petrol. Both manual and automatic transmission options are available across the lineup.
Facelifted Tata Punch and Punch EV
Tata Motors also refreshed its highly successful Punch and Punch EV models in early 2026. The facelifted internal combustion version was introduced in January, while the updated EV followed in February. The Punch sold 19,257 units in January and 18,748 units in February. In March, however, sales rose sharply to 20,977 units, likely driven by the strong demand for the facelifted models. The updated Punch petrol version now offers three powertrain options: a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol, a new 1.2L turbo-petrol, and a CNG variant. The Punch EV has also been upgraded with larger battery packs of 30kWh and 40kWh. The larger battery uses prismatic cells and benefits from an improved powertrain setup for better efficiency and range.
Maruti Suzuki eVitara
Maruti Suzuki entered the EV market with the launch of the eVitara in February 2026, marking a major milestone for the brand. In its first month of deliveries, the company dispatched 870 units of the electric SUV, indicating a positive early market response. Built on the Heartect-e skateboard platform, the eVitara comes with two battery pack options: 49kWh and 61.1kWh. Toyota is also expected to introduce its own version of this EV, named the eBella, soon.
Volkswagen Tayron R-Line
Volkswagen launched the Tayron R-Line in late February as its flagship SUV offering in India. Initial numbers remain modest, with five units sold in January, likely as dealer dispatches, followed by 113 units in the following months. The Tayron R-Line is based on Volkswagen’s MQB Evo platform and is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged TSI EVO petrol engine paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission, targeting premium SUV buyers.
Nissan Gravite, Renault Duster, and Skoda Kushaq Facelift
Nissan introduced the Gravite MPV, based on the Renault Triber, on February 17. Although exact model-wise numbers are unavailable, the launch significantly improved Nissan’s total domestic sales. The company’s sales increased from 2,230 units in February to 4,408 units in March, reflecting a remarkable 98% month-on-month growth.
The new Renault Duster was launched on March 17 and comes with two engine choices: a 1.0L turbocharged petrol and a 1.3L turbocharged petrol. However, since deliveries are still being rolled out gradually, it is too early to evaluate its market performance.
Similarly, the Skoda Kushaq facelift, launched on March 21, is still in its early delivery phase. It retains the existing 1.0L TSI and 1.5L TSI engines, while the smaller engine now gets a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
Final Thoughts
The first few months of 2026 have clearly shown that Indian buyers continue to favor SUVs, feature-rich facelifts, and increasingly, electric vehicles. From the strong sales of the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Kia Seltos to the promising start of the Maruti Suzuki eVitara, the market remains highly competitive. As production improves and deliveries stabilize, many of these models are expected to perform even better in the coming months, making 2026 an exciting year for the Indian automotive industry.
