No Toll Tax From Private Cars In Madhya Pradesh
Taking an appreciating step to stop the long traffic jams on toll plazas the state government of Madhya Pradesh is going to stop charging the toll tax from private car owners. It would be interesting to know that to cope with the problem of long traffic jams on toll plazas the Ministry of Road and Transport had initiated the practice of charging toll tax through FASTag. However, despite this, long traffic jams are common on toll plazas. To cope with this problem the government of Madhya Pradesh has decided to stop the collection of toll tax from private car owners.
A survey was conducted by the state’s Public Works Department on 200 roads maintained by the State Road Development Corporation (SRDC). The findings of this study revealed that more than 80% of tax is collected from commercial vehicles followed by 20% of the tax collected from private cars. The surprising element is that private cars are major contributors to traffic jams on toll plazas. Keeping all these circumstances in concern, the state government headed by the honourable CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan, passed a proposal to exempt the collection of toll tax from private vehicles. This will help in the smooth of flow traffic on toll plazas and control the problem of traffic jams.
This proposal will be implemented on all types of roads including both new and old roads in the state. According to the Principal Secretary of the state, the bill is sent to the cabinet for approval. The step taken by the government of Madhya Pradesh is appreciating, and sets an illustration for other states to follow.
However, this will not be as simple as it seems to be, as the state-wise situation of traffic jams on toll plazas may vary. Moving ahead, there will need to ensure that the number of commercial vehicles is more than private cars on toll plazas. Because stopping the collection of toll tax from private vehicles will directly impact the revenue of states. Moving ahead, the government of India is going to implement the practice of GPS-based toll collection, wherein the vehicles will be charged toll tax according to the distance they travel. This will help in controlling the situation of traffic jams on toll plazas.
