Mahindra Thar: Struggling to be a Family Car
Mahindra Thar, the SUV from the domestic car maker Mahindra & Mahindra, is one of the most appealing SUVs in the country. It would not be wrong to say that once you see it and drive it, you will not wish to buy any other vehicle. Its rugged stance and go-anywhere spirit have made it one of the most desirable SUVs in India. But one question which remains unanswered is whether it is really a family car? Since 2020, many potential buyers have walked into Mahindra showrooms, eyes set on the Thar, but then finally moving towards the more practical Scorpio N or XUV700.

The reason for this ignorance is the three-door entrance, which restricts the adults in the family from easily moving inside the SUV. To cater to this problem, the homegrown carmaker introduced the Roxx as a more family-friendly option. Unfortunately, the question remains — is the refreshed Thar 3-door finally ready to double as a family SUV?
The Case For the 3-Door Thar
The second-generation Thar was already a big leap from its predecessor, but the 2024 refresh makes it even more livable. Many of its old quirks have been ironed out, thanks to Mahindra’s updates.
It now features a 10.25-inch infotainment screen borrowed from the Roxx, complete with Adventure Stats 2.0 for off-road telemetry. A rear washer-wiper, rear-view camera, and improved ergonomics make everyday usability far better. The cabin feels more premium too — there’s a chunky grab handle for easy entry, a revised centre console with an adjustable armrest, and repositioned window switches. Small but thoughtful touches, like a remotely operated fuel door and a proper dead pedal for the automatic version, make a noticeable difference.
These upgrades make the Thar more driver-friendly than ever. For young couples or adventure enthusiasts — especially city-based DINKs (Dual Income, No Kids) with perhaps a pet and a love for the outdoors — the Thar could easily be a one-car garage option. Even as a second vehicle in the household, it’s practical enough for short trips and weekend getaways.
The Case Against the 3-Door Thar
However, when it comes to being a family car, the Thar still struggles. The rear seat remains the biggest compromise. While AC vents now improve comfort, accessibility remains a pain — getting in and out of the back is no small feat. For elderly parents or families with small children, the narrow entryway makes things quite inconvenient. Ride quality is another concern. Despite Mahindra’s continuous suspension tweaks over the years, the Thar still feels bouncy and unsettled at low speeds. Passengers sitting over the rear axle experience the brunt of it. Combine that with a tiny luggage space — barely enough for two large bags — and long road trips become less appealing.
Even Mahindra seems aware of these limitations, which explains why they developed the Thar Roxx. Instead of just stretching the 3-door, Mahindra built the Roxx on a new fourth-generation ladder frame with a multi-link rear suspension and Watts’ linkage, making it far more comfortable and family-oriented.
Final Verdict
The refreshed Mahindra Thar 3-door is definitely more refined, more convenient, and easier to live with. But while it’s perfect for solo adventurers, couples, or as a second car, it’s still not a genuine family SUV. If practicality and comfort are top priorities, the Roxx is the smarter choice. But if heart wins over head, the Thar remains one of the most emotionally satisfying vehicles you can buy.
