Is It Worth Buying the Mahindra Thar Roxx? Some Lesser-Known Facts

Is It Worth Buying the Mahindra Thar Roxx? Some Lesser-Known Facts

Since its launch on August 14, the Mahindra Thar Roxx has created a fuss in the Indian SUV market. The SUV is a five-door version of the iconic Thar, this has helped Roxx in gaining more attention among SUV lovers.  The Roxx carries forward the legacy of Thar to the next level and comes equipped with some remarkable features. However, as every coin has two sides, Thar Roxx is no exception. There are some lesser-known facts which as a potential buyer are important for you to know.
Spacious Yet Strong:  The Thar Roxx offers a spacious cabin, especially for back-seat passengers, while maintaining the rugged off-road capabilities that make the Thar so popular. One of its standout features is the inclusion of Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), which enhances safety and driving convenience. However, despite its many strengths, there are some aspects of the Thar Roxx that potential buyers might find concerning.

The All-White Cabin:  One of the most noticeable changes in the Thar Roxx is the updated interior upholstery, now available in a bright shade of white. While this adds a touch of luxury to the cabin, it also raises practical concerns. The Thar Roxx is designed for off-road adventures, and keeping the white interior spotless might prove to be a challenge. Even during our media test drives, the supposedly brand-new units already showed stain marks on the seats and roof lining. Although Mahindra assures that a damp cloth can easily clean these stains, one has to wonder how often you’d be willing to put in the effort to maintain that pristine look.

Buggy Infotainment: The Thar Roxx comes equipped with an AndrenoX-powered infotainment system, which, on paper, supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, the actual user experience leaves much to be desired. During testing by authentic sources, it was noticed that while Apple CarPlay wasn’t activated in the media units, Mahindra promises this will be fixed for customer vehicles. Yet, even with Android devices, we encountered frequent connection disruptions. Whether using a wireless or wired connection, re-establishing the link was often a frustrating task.

Fuel Efficiency: Fuel efficiency has never been the Thar's forte, and the Roxx seems to follow this tradition. Under the hood, you have the choice between a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, both of which are undeniably powerful. However, this power comes at a cost—literally. During a test drive by authentic sources, with the 2.2-litre diesel variant, it averaged around 9 kmpl, even while driving on open highways with just two passengers, two medium-sized suitcases, and the air conditioning running. The petrol variant, which is yet to be tested by the sources, is expected to offer even lower fuel economy.

The Competition:  As the Thar Roxx prepares for its official test drives next month, with bookings starting on October 3, it aims to challenge more than just the traditional off-road vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha. The Roxx also has its sights set on dethroning popular mid-size SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
