Indian Imports Boost Sri Lanka Vehicle Registrations
he Sri Lankan auto industry is witnessing a dynamic jump in vehicle registration. It is reported that the new vehicle registration in Sri Lanka rose to 55,000 in January from 48,000 units recorded in December. According to analysts at JB Securities, the growth was primarily driven by a sharp rise in imports from India, which surged by 15 percent month-on-month.
Imports From India Lead Growth
The imports of vehicles manufactured in India played a dynamic role in this increase. The import from India increased significantly to 30,766 units in January, compared to 26,631 units in December. The steady demand for affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles from Indian manufacturers continues to shape Sri Lanka’s automobile industry. The major increase was recorded in two-wheelers segment, accounting for 24,163 units. This indicates a strong consumer preference for economical and practical transportation options. Three-wheelers followed with 3,441 units, while SUVs registered 2,100 units, and trucks accounted for 237 units during the month.

Car Registrations Recorded Decline
Surprisingly, where all other auto segments recorded an interesting jump, car registrations recorded a slight decline. In January 4,648 car registrations were recorded, down from 5,007 units in December. This fall suggests cautious buyer sentiment in the passenger car segment despite broader market growth.Three-wheeler registrations, however, showed positive momentum, increasing to 3,448 units from 3,007 units in the previous month.
Bajaj and TVS Maintain Strong Presence
India’s leading manufacturers continued to dominate the two- and three-wheeler segments. Bajaj Auto dominated the market with 2,852 units registered in January, followed by TVS Motor Company with 400 units, strengthening India’s strong hold in the Sri Lankan auto industry. Electric three-wheelers remained marginal, with only 29 units registered during the month, indicating that electrification in this category is still growing.
Market Predictions
The January data highlights a strengthening recovery in Sri Lanka’s automobile sector, led by affordable imports from India and supported by niche demand in the luxury segment. While mass-market mobility remains centered on two- and three-wheelers, the evolving EV space and premium imports continue to shape the country’s dynamic automotive landscape.
