German Automobile Innovation, Volkswagen XL1
The giant German Automaker Volkswagen, once again succeeded in showcasing its innovation the Volkswagen XL1. Before the annual meeting the current chairman, Dr. Ferdinand Piech himself drove this research vehicle to Hamburg from the company's headquarters at an average fuel consumption of 0.89 litres per 100 km. and presented the most economical car in the world at the 42nd Annual Meeting of Stockholders of Volkswagen AG in Hamburg.
The objective of this roadworthy vehicle that consumes just 1.0 litre of fuel per 100 kilometers wouldn’t have been achieved without close cooperation from the numerous suppliers, the result being the vehicle that looks more like a sports car than a typical research vehicle. It’s certainly a smart move in a world of soaring fuel prices.
The car is a hybrid of diesel and electric and has been showcased at the Qatar Auto Show this year. The car is slated to be produced initially as a limited edition for the European market by 2013 and then the expansion will happen to other potential markets depending upon the response. The price tag will be around Rs 22 lakh.
