Flush Fitting Door Handles: Are They Suitable for Cars?
The cars manufactured today are miles ahead of the cars we had two to three decades back. Not only are modern cars mechanically advanced, but they carry designs which till a few years back were just an imagination. With car manufacturers continuously working on creating the development of futuristic models, flush-fitting door handles have emerged as one of the most popular design trends across global markets. Indian automakers, including Tata Motors and Mahindra, have also embraced this styling element in several of their models.
These door handles are mainly used in electric vehicles due to their drag-reducing benefits. These door handles are designed to sit level with the vehicle’s body panels, rather than protruding outward. This small-looking design enhances the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle, playing an important role in enhancing the performance and energy optimisation. Interestingly, the trend has now extended to cars with a petrol engine.

What Are Fitting Door Handles? Flush-fitting door handles are integrated into the car’s door surface. These door handles are not visible at first glance. They stay recessed when not in use and come out electronically when needed. Beyond their clean and futuristic appearance, these handles preserve the vehicle’s character lines and help designers maintain a seamless exterior profile.
Do Flush Fitting Door Handles Pose Safety Risks? Although it is not possible to deny their aesthetics and aerodynamic benefits, these door handles come with several safety-related concerns. These issues are mainly related to electronic dependencies, emergency access, and durability, all of which impact the safety of both vehicle occupants and rescuers during emergencies.
1. Electronic Failure and Power Loss: Most flush-fitting door handles mainly operate through electronic systems. In the event of a power failure or electrical malfunction, the handles may fail to operate, making it hard for occupants to exit the vehicle. In case of an emergency, the failure of the electronic system can even create problems in rescuing the occupants inside the car.
2. Usability and Physical Injuries: The cars with flush door handles are equipped with the facility of unlocking the doors manually; it can be difficult to locate or operate quickly in high-stress conditions. There have also been reports of finger pinching or minor injuries caused by the handle’s design, especially when they retract unexpectedly.
3. Vulnerability During Side Impacts: Flush-fitting handles are not fully resistant to damage. In case of side collisions, which are common in many road accidents, the handle mechanism may get damaged or fail to open. Sometimes, due to water exposure during heavy rain, the chances of a short-circuit in the electric system can put the safety of the occupants on edge.
Balancing Design and Safety: The integration of flush-fitting door handles is an important step in designing the aerodynamic style of a vehicle. Although they help in creating a cleaner design and better airflow, the potential safety risks cannot be overlooked. Manufacturers must balance aesthetics with reliability by improving backup mechanisms, ensuring weather resistance, and strengthening emergency accessibility.
