ABB OM M-Series EV Charging: Smarter EV Solution 2026

ABB OM M-Series EV Charging: Smarter EV Solution 2026

As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow rapidly across the globe, the demand for efficient and scalable charging infrastructure is becoming more important than ever. To meet this demand, ABB E-mobility has introduced its latest innovation—the OM M-Series charging infrastructure—unveiled in Zurich on April 23, 2026. This new modular and air-cooled split charging system is designed to offer greater flexibility, improved energy efficiency, and better cost management for charging station operators. With its advanced architecture and scalable design, the OM M-Series is expected to support the next generation of EV charging across multiple sectors.

A Smarter Approach to EV Charging

The OM M-Series uses a split-system design that separates power generation from power dispensing. This approach allows operators to customize charging setups based on how the site is used, rather than relying on fixed charging outputs for every station. At the center of the system are centralized power cabinets connected to several purpose-built dispensers. These include:

Solo
Duo
Dock
Ultra

Each dispenser is designed to support different charging needs and vehicle types, making the system highly adaptable for various applications.

Support for Multiple Charging Standards

One of the key strengths of the OM M-Series is its compatibility with multiple charging standards. It supports:

CCS1
CCS2
NACS
MCS

This wide compatibility ensures that the system can serve a broad range of electric vehicles, from passenger cars to heavy-duty commercial fleets. Instead of assigning a fixed power output to each charging point, the system uses dynamic power distribution. This means the total installed power is treated as a shared resource, allowing real-time allocation based on actual charging demand and vehicle requirements.

Scalable Power Capacity for Future Growth

The OM M-Series is built for scalability. It starts at 200 kW and can expand all the way up to 1.2 MW, supporting a maximum of 24 charge points.Operators can increase power capacity in the field by adding 400 kW increments across up to three interconnected cabinets. This flexibility allows businesses to grow their charging infrastructure as demand increases, without needing a complete system replacement. Additionally, the system offers an impressive power density of 625 kW per square meter. This compact footprint makes it ideal for locations where land availability is limited or expensive.

Designed for Multiple Site Types

ABB E-mobility is targeting three major types of charging locations with the OM M-Series:
  1. Perfect for highways and urban charging hubs where fast turnaround times are essential.
  2. Retail and Hospitality Destinations
  3. Shopping centers, hotels, and restaurants can offer convenient EV charging while customers spend time on-site.
  4. Commercial Fleet Depots
  5. Fleet operators can benefit from reliable and scalable charging for delivery vans, buses, and commercial vehicles.
  6. Smart Energy Management and AI Integration

The OM M-Series also integrates with ABB’s asset operations platform, enabling AI-driven fault detection and improved field service management. This helps operators reduce downtime, improve maintenance efficiency, and optimize overall charging performance. Additionally, the system supports optional AC-coupled battery storage. This feature helps with peak shaving, reducing electricity costs during high-demand periods while improving overall site-level energy flexibility.

Industry Focus Shifting Toward Long-Term Efficiency

Michael Halbherr, CEO of ABB E-mobility, highlighted an important industry trend during the launch. He explained that the EV charging industry is now shifting focus from simply installing more capacity to reducing the lifetime cost of energy delivered. According to him, the OM M-Series is built to consistently deliver power across different vehicle types, charging points, and usage levels, ensuring both performance and long-term cost efficiency.

Final Thoughts

ABB’s OM M-Series represents a major step forward in EV charging infrastructure. With its modular architecture, dynamic power distribution, compact design, and AI-powered operations, it offers a practical solution for the growing demands of electric mobility. As businesses and cities continue investing in sustainable transportation, systems like the OM M-Series will play a critical role in making EV charging smarter, faster, and more reliable for everyone.
