4 Cars That Are Made in India But Popular in Global Markets
During the last one and a half decades, India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing automotive markets across the world. Many carmakers are launching their vehicles not only in India but also exporting them to global markets. Interestingly, some cars made in India are far more popular overseas than they are among Indian buyers. While Indian customers may overlook certain models due to pricing, preferences, or market trends, these same vehicles perform exceptionally well in countries like Japan, the UAE, Africa, and Latin America. Their strong export numbers clearly show that international buyers appreciate what these cars offer. Here are four Made-in-India cars that enjoy much stronger demand in global markets than in India.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny – 72,209 Units Exported
The first and one of the most exported vehicles from India is the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Although the Jimny is a capable off-roader with strong international appeal, it has not succeeded in gaining the same popularity in India. One of the most notable reasons behind its low popularity is its pricing, which is almost equivalent to that of a more powerful and rugged Mahindra Thar SUV. Due to this reason, the Mahindra Thar is highly preferred by Indian buyers rather than the Jimny. While comparing its sales to the global market, Jimny is the second-highest exported model with 72, 209 units exported in countries like Japan, the UAE and others. Unfortunately, its average monthly sales in India car market is about 500-600 units.
Hyundai Verna – 63,044 Units Exported
The Hyundai Verna is another strong example of a car that performs much better internationally than in India. While sedans have been losing popularity in the Indian market due to the rising demand for SUVs, they continue to remain highly desirable in global markets. In FY26, Hyundai exported 63,044 units of the Verna, registering a healthy growth of 19.8 per cent compared to FY25, when it sold 52,615 units. This makes the Verna the third most exported car from India. In India, the Verna usually sells below 1,500 units monthly, with an average of around 800 to 900 units. Compared to annual exports crossing 63,000 units, it is clear that international buyers value this premium sedan much more than Indian customers.
Nissan Magnite – 56,704 Units Exported
The Nissan Magnite has been the key model keeping Nissan relevant in the Indian market. This sub-compact SUV has delivered stable domestic sales, but its real success story lies in exports. In FY26, Nissan exported 56,704 units of the Magnite, a massive jump from 29,155 units in FY25. This represents an impressive 94.5 percent growth, making it the fastest-growing export model among the top exported cars from India. Domestically, the Magnite averages around 1,800 to 2,000 units per month. However, its export performance is more than double its local sales contribution. With Nissan preparing to launch new models like the Tekton and additional SUVs, the brand is expected to strengthen its position further in the Indian market as well.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso – 40,210 Units Exported
The final car on the list is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso. In India, the S-Presso has often faced criticism for its design and build quality, which has affected its popularity among buyers. Despite this, the hatchback continues to perform strongly in export markets where affordability and practicality are major priorities. In FY26, Maruti Suzuki exported 40,210 units of the S-Presso, compared to 24,978 units in FY25. This marks an impressive 61 per cent year-on-year growth. Its domestic sales have been highly inconsistent, with sharp ups and downs. However, the consistent strength in exports proves that the S-Presso has found better acceptance in international markets than in India.
Final Thoughts
These four cars prove that success in the automobile industry is not always measured by domestic sales alone. While Indian buyers may prefer larger SUVs or more premium offerings, international markets often value practicality, affordability, fuel efficiency, and reliability. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny, Hyundai Verna, Nissan Magnite, and Maruti Suzuki S-Presso have all found strong customer bases overseas, making them export champions for India’s automotive industry. Their success highlights India’s growing role as a global automobile manufacturing and export powerhouse.
