2026 To Mark the Return of SUVs in India

Despite various new launches in the coming months, the Indian car market will mark the return of some legendary SUVs this year. Just in three months, the year has witnessed the launch of the legendary Sierra SUV by the domestic carmaker Tata Motors, followed by the Iconic Duster from the French carmaker Renault.

Tata Sierra: A Legendary Name Returns

The revival journey began with the Tata Sierra, one of India’s earliest compact SUVs. Though originally ahead of its time, the Sierra built a cult following over the years, eventually prompting Tata Motors to bring it back.
Launched in 2025 with deliveries starting in January 2026, the new Sierra is a completely modern SUV with no mechanical similarities to its predecessor. It is built on a new platform and comes loaded with advanced features such as:
• Triple-screen dashboard setup
• Leatherette upholstery and ventilated seats
• Panoramic sunroof
• Automatic climate control
• Level 2 ADAS and multiple safety features
• 5-star crash test rating
Engine Options:

Priced between Rs11.49 lakh and Rs21.29 lakh (ex-showroom), the Sierra is available in multiple variants, including Smart+, Pure, Adventure, and Accomplished trims. Tata has already delivered over 14,000 units, with an electric version expected in Q2 2026.

Renault Duster: The Segment Creator Returns

Next in line is the comeback of the Renault Duster, a name that once revolutionised the compact SUV segment in India. Built on the CMF-B platform, the new Duster blends its rugged identity with modern features.Key Features:
• Driver-centric touchscreen infotainment system
• Fully digital instrument cluster
• Ventilated seats and leatherette upholstery
• Panoramic sunroof
• Level 2 ADAS

Unlike the global version, the India-spec Duster skips the 4x4 variant to maintain competitive pricing.

Engine Options:

• 1.0L turbo petrol (100 PS, 160–180 Nm) – Manual
• 1.3L turbo petrol (163 PS, 280 Nm) – Manual & DCT

The hybrid variant, featuring a 1.8 kWh battery, is designed to run up to 80% in EV mode within city conditions.
Priced between Rs10.49 lakh and Rs18.69 lakh (ex-showroom), the Duster is offered in variants like Authentic, Evolution, Techno, and Iconic. The response has been overwhelming, with bookings already sold out for 2026. A 7-seater version inspired by the Bigster is also expected.

Nissan Tekton: The Next Big Comeback

After a long period of inactivity, Nissan is preparing for a strong comeback with its upcoming SUV, the Nissan Tekton. Developed in partnership with Renault, the Tekton will share the CMF-B platform with the Duster but feature a completely unique design. Inspired by the iconic Nissan Patrol, the Tekton is expected to have a bold and muscular appearance.

Expected Exterior Highlights:
• LED DRLs with a connected light strip
• Large grille with Nissan branding
• Flared wheel arches and rugged cladding
• Roof rails, shark-fin antenna, and LED tail lamps

Interior & Features:
